Yes. Get a teacher.
Look: beginners have to pay attention to holding the instrument, hand positions, fingering, frets, plucking, notes, rhythms, etc. That's information overload, and you're going to make mistakes. If the mistakes get to be habits, you will perhaps ruin your potential–and even worse, you increase the risk of repetivie motion injury.
A dozen half-hour lessons from a good teacher will set your fundamentals properly.
If you need to go cheap, advertise for a teacher with a note on a bulletin board at a local college's music department. You might land a guitar major. Otherwise, ask for referrals at that music department, or at the better music stores in your city.
After a dozen lessons, you'll be ready for self-teaching. Buy a lot of materials on ebay or at used bookstores–and then use the ones that are at your level, and save the advanced ones for later when you catch up to them.
