bank not approving savings application?

okay… so i was trying to open up a savings account online with wamu for my boyfriend. he didn't get approved. it said something about his application getting cancelled and to go into a branch. so we went into a branch and they said they could only open the account in the branch, but the interest wouldn't be 3.30% since it wouldn't be an online savings account. so we left.

then we came to my house and tried opening up an hsbc online savings account (3.50% interest!!!) i opened mine first… of course i got approved! but when we tried opening his… it said it was pending!

my question is… why won't they approve him to get a bank account? he's 19, he has no credit and i want him to start off with a bank account to learn how to manage his money.

what should we do? i thought maybe we should have him apply for credit at like sam ash or guitar center just to get some inquiries on his credit report and maybe that way the banks will recognize him???

help please!
by the way, he's unemployed.

the fact that he has no job and no credit is what is keeping him from getting an account. especially the online ones with higher interest.

thats why they are harder to get because they have better interest. banks dont want to give better rates to people with no history.

what you need to do is open an account at a branch if that is all he can get and have him use that for a while to show he is responsible with that. if you get wamu at the branch and he is good with that for a while, i dont see why they would then later deny it for the online one and you could close the branch one.

you should probably also work on getting him a credit card, something small, like a secured one, or a student card if hes a student. try citibank or capital one for students. or look for secured cards online.

however, he'd be much more likely to get approved if he had a job.
