Has anyone ever done it and actually become good? I really want to learn and right now I can't get actual lessons. Also, my guitar is older than I am, and i've had to replace some of the strings with the clear ones (forogt what they're called).
I used to play violin, but that seems almost completely different than guitar, but does that help at all?

i played viola before taking up guitar, dont worry its not too hard to learn but the violin will not help you, the strings are tuned very differently and generally you read TAB for guitar as its much easier and straught forward with chords etc
you dont need lessons, some of the best players in the world have been self taught… its better in my opinion as you dont neccersarily follow a traditional path or methods of playing
still, if you can buy a book or magazine for a few basic tips it may be a help if youre a little confused at any point
