people have told me its better to learn acoustic before, is this true?

No you dont have to, but it is better. Its more difficult to learn acoustic (properly) than it is to learn Electric Guitar. So, if you learn Acoustic first, its easy to adapt to Electric. but if you learn electric first, its more difficult to then learn Acoustic. Also, Electric has a lot of shortcuts, whereas with acoustic you must learn the traditional way. My advice would be, Acoustic, then Electric, or a combination of both.
