I have been playing guitar for 2 years now and i am learning with a qualified teacher. I am not sure if i am good or not at the moment due to the fact i have not played very long. my teacher is doing a good job but i want to get a lot more out of my guitar and want to get a lot better at my theory on top of my lessons. ive gone onto sites and it always leads me to promotional material about purchasing a guitar dvd etc. How can i get better at my theory and play some awesome scales etc on top of my lessosn for free. If there are any good guitarists who felt the same way i would appreciate help??
Just a few ideas, I’m by no means an expert!
Learn and practice all scales including modes etc.
Play over your favourite songs.
Play over songs that you don’t know (to broaden your musical horizons)
Try to learn songs by ear rather than using the music.
(If in UK) Take your grade 5 (or higher) theory.
Listen to as many different genres (types) of music as possible, not just guitar and stuff you like.
Get involved in some live performances. Its always nice to have something to work towards.
