I would take real lesson's but i'm a poor, busy college student.
Get a beginners book like Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method or something similar.
Its boring as hell but you learn the basics. Also, there are a lot of good websites around. I used cyberfret.com. I learned alot of cool songs pretty fast from it.
…also when i learned how to read tabs it helped SO much. I learned from a friend who was an experience guitar player. Try asking some people who are good.
