Hi, I have bought a started pack (electric guitar of course)
The amp I have is a basic one.. you know, so it does NOT have any distortion settings.. just Gain, Bass, Middle &Trible.. Any Ideas on how to get high distortion out of it? I'm trying to play metal..
Well, I'm sorry to say dude – but with a starter pack guitar amp you're not gonna get ANYWHERE near the tone you're looking for ![]()
I'd start saving your moolah for a better amp already, you'll definatley thank me for it.
Anyhoo, I'll give you some settings for your amp that hopefully will keep you sweet in the meantime.
The tones of most metal players are very heavy on the bass and gain, so i'd start by jacking the gain up either full or nearly full. Set it so that the knob is sitting at the 3 o'clock position (that would mean that it's pointing that way ->).
I'd put your bass to around 1 or 2 o'clock, and I'd roll the treble back to 10 o'clock, because if you put too much treble on it'll get horribly screechy and thin sounding. Now, for the mids. Most beginner players listen to their metal records and completely cut out the mids because they think that will get them close to the metal tones. I can tell you this is absolutley not the case, and in fact most metal players use a LOT of mids, for the simple reason that if you don't – when you're playing with a bassist and drummer your guitar won't be heard over them. Anything you hear on a record has been doctored by a soundman. With that in mind I'd set the mids to about 2 O'clock.
I hope this helps man, but remember that if you want a good tone, you'll need good gear and unfortunatley that means expensive gear. Try looking on Ebay for used amplifiers and guitars.
Good luck dude, and keep practicing!!
