How Can I Get More Motivated To Play Guitar?

I’ve been playing guitar for about 2 years now, and I really haven’t gotten much better in a 2-year period. I do enjoy playing guitar, but I don’t really feel motivated, and I get really lazy. Every time I try to learn something new to play, I only learn like a part of it, and then I give up.

How can I get more motivated to play?

I’ve had this happen before and it’s nothing out of the ordinary for a lot of people who play instruments. Think about the reason WHY you wanted to play guitar in the first place and go from there. That’s the main thing that should get you motivated. If you don’t have a reason/goal, you’re not going to get anywhere.

Unlike you, I take lessons and I remember somewhere in the middle of my 3 1/2 years of playing where I would practice everyday, but not enough (this was because I wasn’t motivated like before to keep going). I got a wake up call when I realized that I not only wanted to practice to get closer to where I wanted to be on guitar (and please myself), but I also didn’t want to let my teacher down. Those factors alone got the fire in me to practice again (and for longer periods). I also remembered that I wanted to play like John Mayer as well (still do).

You know what? Maybe you should take lessons (if you really have desire to learn and a good enough reason to). Perhaps that’s just what you need: when you have someone else to make happy, not just yourself you’ll work at it and not be lazy.
