what is needed to "beat" a song? I rented the game it has no instruction manual 
Doh! I was in quick play I guess that expains my problems LOL
To beat a song you simply play it until the song finishes, it will say 'YOU ROCK'
if you get too many notes wrong you'll fail and the song will cut off before the end
you have to play Career mode to unlock other stages and songs
