All I want to do is learn enough to write my own music. I have a lot of lyrics but no way to express without music. I know it takes years to perfect the art but is it that hard?

Learning to play guitar and learning how to write music are two different goals.
If you are looking to perform your music using a guitar, and you practice regularly following lessons step by step, and you have a reasonable quality guitar, you should be able to play enough guitar to strum along in a few months, but you won’t master it for years. Everything will feel very awkward at first and it will take time to get used to it, but after a while your guitar will feel like an extension of your body.
To play your music you will need to learn the basic chords(at least 3 per key). The more chords you learn the better.
For the song writing part you will have to learn some music theory, there is no way around that. You have to understand rhythm and which chords are used in which keys.
The better you understand music, the better your music will become.
