i think you are talking about barre chords. for a barre chord you would use your index finger like a capo and hold down all the strings on a certian fret like this

if this is what you are talking about you just use your index finger to hold down all the strings on the third fret and then use your other fingers to hold down the other strings. they are pretty hard to do they take some practice.
