How to learn playing guitar?

How many time would it take to learn it? What methods do you know to learn it by yourself? What would be a good guitar for beginners? Is there a website/book you can recommend?
BTW I mean electric guitar, NOT acoustic (if there’s any difference)
Sorry for that "if there’s any difference". I meant in terms of learning to play it ;-)

Yes there is a difference between an electric and an acoustic and you should learn on an acoustic first. An electric guitar is a precision instrument and requires more coordination and dexterity to play correctly. The acoustic guitar offers a bit more resistance and helps develop strength and coordination faster. The knowledge and ability that you develop on an acoustic guitar will transfer easily to electric and will make playing an electric much easier. The best way to learn guitar is to take lessons with a good, qualified, local instructor. Check with your local music stores to find a teacher in your area.
%90 of all people who decide to learn guitar on their own quit in the first few months because it is to hard or they don’t feel competent enough to play it. Although learning guitar is not that difficult it can be very frustrating at first. The reason for this is that we learn by putting our left hand on the neck and strumming with our right hand. The fact that our left hand is totally uncoordinated makes it very awkward at first and usually frustrates most people into quitting. A good teacher can help you through the awkward stages and get you playing well much faster then if you try to learn on your own. Guitar takes many years to learn how to play very well but a teacher will get you off to a much faster start and within a few months you will be playing several basic songs. In my experience a student will learn more in a month of good lessons then in a year of self study
