How to play record player through guitar amp.?

Posted by Rob · Wednesday

I have a Radio Shack realistic Clarinette turntable thats probably 40 years old, and i am currently playing it through a 15 watt Crate guitar amp. It plays, but only the left side, how do i make it play both left and right???
Im playing it with a guitar cord

I know what the problem is.

The turntable has stereo output, but the guitar amp only has mono input. If you look at a set of headphones, they’ve got 2 stripes on the plug, the guitar cable only has 1. Thats the difference.

You need a way to combine the stereo signal into a mono 1/4" plug signal. You need an adapter of some sort. Stereo to Mono somehow.

The very simple way to fix this is to take the turntable into radioshack and they will hook you up with the right adapters you need – it should be about $10.

Good Luck,
John

The needle holder should have 4 wires going to it. Two wires are for Left Channel and Ground and two wires for Right Channel and Ground. The wires go into a Left Channel amplifier and a Right Channel amplifier. Since you are using one guitar amp I would suspect you need another amplifier and speaker connected to the turntable.

Most turntables used 2 RCA type plugs and jacks that plugged into the amps. Some, however, used Stereo RCA plugs and jacks. The jacks were split with a rubber grommet and had 4 wires that went to the amplifiers. If you have one plug at the turntable then remove the bottom to see if there are 4 wires going to it. You may have to modify a jack to get stereo operation.

Of course, if you have only 2 wires coming out of the needle holder then you have a monoral turntable.

I don’t understand how you say you only get sound out of one side of a guitar amp. A guitar amp. is a mono device….the inputs are mono jacks…..have you checked that both speakers(if equipped) are working? Your turntable from 1970 would be stereo and have two RCA jacks to connect to amp. To use with guitar amp. you need to join with adaptor cable the two RCA jacks to one 1/4 inch mono plug(like a guitar jack). Even if one channel on turntable doesn’t work, the amp should still work. If the amp. has twin speakers and only one works, the amp. is the problem.
