Head to the local flea market or browse garage sales.
Seriously, if you dive right in and blow 1000 bucks on a really nice guitar, it's going to really suck if you find out guitar playing doesn't suit you.
On the other hand, drop 20 bucks on a used guitar and some new strings, and get really good on that, and THEN get out your wallet and get something nice. Instead of the potential of being out hundreds, you'll only be out 20.
