Learning Guitar…”A horse with no name”?

Question by Q: Learning Guitar…”A horse with no name”?
I am currently self-studying the guitar. I cannot afford lessons and I recently moved from Italy, so I don’t know anyone in my area that plays the guitar. Ultimatley I have to rely on myself and your sage advice.

“A horse with no name” is proving to be the bane of my existence. It is supposed to be a simple song and I can’t seem to learn it. I have learned the E minor chord and I have learned Dadd6add9. I strum the E minor Down Down Down Up Down Up and I strum the Dadd6add9 Up Down Up Down Up Up Down Up. Ostensibly, I am following the correct sequence, but all I seem to be creating is a racket. I am timing my strums correctly and I believe my guitar is tuned. I am obviously using the second fret for Em and Dadd6add9 and I am strumming all the strings. Evidently, since you cannot see me play you cannot critique, but I was wondering if there is a common blunder associated with the song or a beginner? Am I just maladroit?

Thanks

Have you listened to AMERICA do that song (“History: AMerica’s Greatest Hits”)? Sometimes if you get what it should sound like in your head and can help you recreate it.
