Guitar Effects Pedals

If you are serious about the guitar then you may want to consider investing in guitar effects. Guitar effects pedals come in lots of different shapes and sizes. Their main use is to change the way your guitar sounds.

There are thousands of different guitar effects pedals to choose from some new some rare and old – some create sounds that alters your guitar sound so much it is almost unrecognisable as a guitar sound.

Guitar effects pedals come in many different formats. You can get he single effects units – often called stomp boxes and chain them together or you can opt for a multi effects unit that combines lots of effects in one box. There are also other formats such as rack mounted effects units and processors.

For the purpose of this article I am going to illustrate a couple of the most commonly used guitar effects pedals that I consider an essential. I personally use these pedals. These can be easily chained together in whatever way you choose and changed to get the sound that you want from your guitar.

Distortion / overdrive pedals

Whilst the above is in fact two separate pedals the effect they produce are similar. I personally own a distortion pedal but tend to use the amplifiers overdrive effect to get the sound I want.. Basically they take your clean sound and convert it to an overdriven or distorted sound. This gives you a rock type sound found on hundreds of songs.

Wah Pedals

Wah pedals are a great guitar effects pedal. Rather than just an on/off situation this is an expression pedal. It is called a wah pedal because literally, it makes your guitar sound as though it is saying awaha. This is great for slow and fast lead playing and produces some really great results.

Delay Pedals

This adds an echo effect to your sound. Can be used to layer multiple sounds or, more commonly, and in my case, used to beef up your lead sound. It is a subtle difference that can make such a difference to your playing.

Chorus Pedals

Another popular guitar pedal that adds depth to both your clean and distorted tone is the chorus pedal. This thickens the sound by doubling up notes in layers and altering delays in a very subtle way.

With guitar effects pedals there are massive differences in sound quality. Often the more expensive a pedal is, the better it will be. It is also very true, especially with the examples above, the older the pedal is the better quality sound it will produce. As with most things guitar related, they don’t make things like they used to.

Learn About How A Guitar Works And Makes Sound

How Guitars Work

Many people, guitarists included, have probably wondered how exactly guitars work. However, they probably also are confused by all of the terms used to describe how a guitar produces the sound we hear. There is quite a bit of physics involved in it, and those who haven’t taken a day of physics in their life probably wouldn’t understand it. This is where this article comes in handy. In this article, we will describe how both Acoustic and Electric guitars work in terms that everyone will understand.

How the Acoustic Works:

To start with, when a string vibrates (when you play it), it produces vibration at a certain frequency. The frequency at which a string vibrates is determined by the weight, length, and tension of the string.

The body of the guitar takes in the vibration of the strings and then puts the sound out into the air. This is the sound that is heard when the guitar string is played.

On an Acoustic guitar, there is a soundhole. This soundhole serves to amplify the sound of the vibration produced by the strings. Without the soundhole, the sound would be practically inaudible, which is the case with a solid body Electric guitar.

To alter the length (and therefore change the sound that is heard) of the string, you’ll alter the tension of the string. You do this by pressing down on the string on any of the frets and then playing that string. Doing so changes the frequency of the vibration, which, in turn, alters the sound that is heard.

How the Electric guitar Works:

Electric guitars really aren’t that much different from Acoustic guitars. In fact, the main difference between the two is that one is made of solid wood (with no holes), while the other has a hollow-body (with a soundhole). How Electric guitars work is a bit different than how Acoustic guitars do.

Just like with the Acoustic guitar, when a string is played, it vibrates. That vibration produces the sound that we hear. The frequency of the vibration is, again, determined by the weight, length and tension of the string.

With no soundhole, the Electric guitar is unable to self-amplify the sound produced by the vibration of the strings. Thus, the sound heard from an un-amplified Electric guitar is minimal. This is why guitar pickups and amplifiers are necessary to produce the sound loud enough for people to hear.

Pickups basically take the vibration of the strings and convert it into a useable electrical current. This current is then fed into the amplifier by way of a cable which is then interpreted by the amplifier. The sound that results comes out of the amplifier speaker.

Amplifiers that have pre-built distortion (and practically all of them do now) can distort the electrical current (vibration) by clipping it. The sound that results from this clipping is what is called distortion.

Other types of guitar effects found on amps and pedals do pretty much the same thing—they alter the electrical current which is fed to them by the pickups of the guitar.

And there you have it. That is, in a nutshell, exactly how guitars work. No physics necessary.

Newbie Guitar Chords Lesson

Is there a sound more soulful and more resonant than a well-played guitar? It is the sound of life and the sound of the soul.

You can make it yours.

That is, if you are up for it. Working out the way to read your free guitar chords? If you are teaching yourself to play the guitar, you’ll be reading lots of manuals full of diagrams and notations. The frightening task shouldn’t moisten your interest as it is essentially simple so long as you put your consciousness into it. Imagine now you are looking at a blank diagram. The diagram will represent your guitar. The vertical lines are the six strings of your guitar. The horizontal lines are the frets. Do not count the last line on top. That is your guitar’s nut and nuts should be ignored, no joke intended. The dots will have numbers to point out which finger to use on a specific string. When the dots appear without a number within, it appears like this : O this implies you aren’t going to play the string. You can also learn which finger will be one, two, three, and four. The thumb isn’t included in the count, but is delegated as T. At first, there’ll be some difficulty and awkwardness with the fingers when learning your free guitar chords specifically prepared for beginners’ lessons. Newbies are suggested to focus on the chords, the strumming later.
As each chord is sounded, listen punctiliously to the sound and become used to the feeling of the chord on your fingertips. Getting the feeling of free guitar chords Guitar chords are prepared according to basic chord patterns. The CAGED system represents the major chords : C, A, G, E, and D. This is introduced to prepare newbies for more complicated chords. Constantly later lessons will bring in the F and B chords and the chords with residences and sharps. When the lessons have eventually been learned by heart, the succeeding lessons will be less complicated. Still, you have got to constantly practice with free guitar chords to polish your craft. When you are downloading free guitar chords, get video demos to bolster your guitar instructions while you are at it.

By watching how the chords are played, you’ll be boosting your playing style. As a new person to guitar playing, you almost certainly place one finger at a time on the strings. This can be unwieldy later when you have to change chords fast. Make finger exercises part of your routine to help touch all of the required strings at any particular time. This exercise needs placing your fingers on the strings, lifting your fingers, and placing your fingers on the well regarded strings at the same time. Repetition will help you perfect the talent. Indeed, learning how to play the guitar could be a lot of tough work. But then, no-one ever recounted it’d be straightforward, only that it might be worthwhile.

A Brief History Of Yamaha Electric Guitars

With over a hundred years of experience manufacturing musical instruments, Yamaha is universally acknowledged as the producer some of the world’s finest instruments. Yamaha started guitar production in the mid 1940′s and from that day to this have produced a wide variety of guitars to fulfil the needs of all players, from beginner to enthusiast and on to professional.

In February of 1964 The Beatles appeared on the “Ed Sullivan Show” in the USA and at a stroke the music world was changed, the electric guitar was here to stay. In the wake of this Yamaha began producing solid body electric guitars at their Hamamatsu facility in 1965 and early models of both electric and electric bass guitars debuted in 1966.

By the mid 1970′s legendary guitar artists such as Carlos Santana began to use Yamaha Guitars eschewing some of the great American brand names in favour of the unique features and superb build quality provided by these instruments. With the development of the SG2000 model in consultation with Carlos Santana, with it’s through neck construction and patented “T-Cross System” and “Sustain Plate”, Yamaha truly broke the mould, and in doing so the stranglehold of the two big American manufacturers. These innovations gave the instrument monumental sustain in conjunction with a powerful and warm tonality. With the ringing endorsement of legendary musicians such as Bob Marley, Steve Cropper, Phil Manzanera, and Carlos Rios, Yamaha’s SG range of guitars had sealed their place amongst the elite manufacturers of electric guitars. From there on Yamaha Guitars have gone from strength to strength, not just producing the instruments we see being used by some of the worlds great guitar innovators, but also truly blazing a trail in the production of high quality, affordable instruments for beginners and intermediate players alike.

At the end of the 1980′s Yamaha Guitar Development opened in North Hollywood, California. One of the first designs to come from there was the Pacifica series, this was a quantum leap for Yamaha Guitars, as it was an instrument designed and prototyped in the American custom shop with direct input from pro players. From this series there is a direct lineage to the entry level Yamaha guitars produced today. Today Yamaha provide a range of electric and bass guitars to cover all genres and to suit every pocket, so whether you aspire to the adrenaline fuelled world of hard rock, the smooth sophistication of jazz or anywhere in between there is something for you.

In the same way that the SG2000 took the electric guitar world by storm, in 1977 the release of the Yamaha “Broad Bass” or BB1200 bass guitar turned the world of bass guitarists upside down. Once again Yamaha were amongst the forerunners in the introduction of through neck construction, with it’s enhanced sustain characteristics and inherent advantages in terms of stability. This coupled with peerless build quality made the BB basses an instant hit, with Paul McCartney himself playing a BB1200S in the early 1980′s. To this day Yamaha’s place in the world of bass has been ensured with great session players like Abraham Laboriel and Nathan East playing Yamaha Basses, alongside cutting edge artists such as Billy Sheehan, John Patitucci and John Myung. Once again the developments made with these wonderful musicians are put to good use in the instruments Yamaha make for beginners and intermediate players making for a great playing experience for all.

A brief look at some of the legendary names that have wielded Yamaha guitars and bass guitars gives you an idea of the exalted company you’ll be keeping when you buy yours. Jimmy Page, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, James Taylor, John Denver, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Brian May, Carlos Santana, Bob Marley, Lee Ritenour, Martin Taylor, Nathan East, Billy Sheehan, Michael Anthony… the list goes on.

Easy Guitar Lesson – 3 Shortcuts To Improving Your Electric Guitar Skills

Copyright (c) 2010 Ewen Chia

Playing the electric guitar with easy guitar lessons online can be a breeze if you manage to find the right mentor. With tons of options from beginner guitar courses to guitar lesson DVD, the Internet has made easy guitar lessons online a reality. Most electric guitar players start on their guitar journey with the glorious stardom of their admired bands and guitarists. You stand in front of the mirror playing the air guitar, imitation your guitar idols. This may not be that far achieving the dream is you pick the right easy guitar lesson.

While very glamorous, playing the guitar is not as tough as it used to be because of all the new and creative teaching methods that guitar teachers utilize. While many of your guitar gods play the guitar flawlessly now, many started with traditional lessons that built the foundation. Many of the guitar gods like John Mayer and Jimi Hendrik have expended many years of their time to perfecting their guitar playing. For a start, go online and find an easy guitar lesson course or perhaps a guitar lesson DVD.

After you learnt how to play notes, chords and the rest, here are a few practice tips you can use to bring your skills up to the next level:

Master famous riffs

There are tons of very simple, but impressive sounding electric guitar riffs out there. These are great way to put your basic skills into use and develop it into something a little more advanced. A few very good guitar riffs for beginners are “Smoke On The Water” by Deep Purple, “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry and “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Practice them until you are familiar with them but at the same time, do not get too hooked up with playing them too much. Always make it a point to play a greater variety of songs to expand your skills.

Learn tons of chords!

One very often misunderstanding of the basics is that chords are just boring fundamentals. It is true that chords are one of the first things you will learn when you pick up the guitar but they are extensive and is the building block for other techniques down the road. Make sure you command mastery over as many of them as possible.

Practice often with faster licks and riffs

Faster licks and riffs will build up your agility with the guitar while extending your endurance with playing fast notes so you do not get fatigued after playing a demanding portion of a song. Practicing faster licks and riffs is not about just being to play fast, however. More importantly, it is about accuracy and speed combined. What you want to achieve is playing fast notes in succession with pinpoint accuracy as well.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 16, 2008

Mel Bay Publications will debut a new bass guitar book instructional method at the 2008 Winter NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in Anaheim, California this Tuesday. The book is entitled “Essential Music Theory For Electric Bass”, and written by Robert Garner.

This bass guitar book is designed to help guide a beginning music theory dialogue between bass instructor and bass student in private bass guitar lessons. Six areas of music theory are covered: The major scale, the natural minor scale, intervals, triads, seventh chords and harmonized major and minor scales. Fingerings, intervallic structures and note names are also diagrammed in each chapter.

Each chapter contains a thorough written review to test the reader’s understanding of concepts, and an answer key is available in the back of the book. Chapters are laid out one concept at a time, creating focus for each of these fundamental elements of music theory. Test worksheet sections feature four-string bass fretboard diagrams for labeling, fill-in-the-blank questions, and true-false questions, and a final review is also included. With its big bold examples that are easy for both instructor and student to view from a music stand, “Essential Music Theory For Electric Bass” is an essential beginning method for beginning bass students, or for intermediate to advanced players who would like a thorough review of music theory concepts, applied directly to the electric bass.

The book is recommended for use in the course of study with a professional bass instructor, though many players find the book to be useful in self-study. A good bass teacher will help explain and demonstrate theory concepts in a live setting and also shed additional light in terms of alternate fingerings, ear training and gaining full technical mastery of theory concepts across the entire fingerboard.

The book was first published independently in 1996 by Robert Garner, and has been previously mentioned in Bass Player, Bass Frontiers, and Bassics bass magazines. Garner has taught over 1,000 bass students, and created the book to use as a guide to basic music theory concepts, both in theory and technical application on the four-string electric bass. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas at Arlington.

For dealer inquiries, please call Mel Bay Publications at 1.800.8MELBAY, or visit the Mel Bay Publications booth 3304 in Hall D at the 2008 Winter NAMM, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, California, January 17-20.

For more information, contact Mr. Robert Garner, or Mel Bay Publications.
