Guitar For Kids — Common Chord Progressions

Hey guys…

One of the things that will help ya’ll understand the idea of playing in keys is to understand major scales and the chords that come naturally from them.

In past lessons, I had really tried hard to get you to understand the value of understanding and memorizing the Chromatic Scale.

A A#/Bb B C C#/Db D D#/Eb E F F#/Gb G G#/Ab A

If you do understand this scale, you will:

1. Understand the formula for creating a major scale ( 1+1+1/2+1+1+1+1/2 )
2. Understand intervals such as the 3rd and the 5th
3. Understand the quality of intervals such as the major 3rd and the minor 3rd — which is what chords are made of
4. Understand other stuff down the road such as how to transpose music
5. Be able to identify the notes on your guitar
6. Understand the idea of movable chord forms

All of this theory type stuff COMES FROM an understanding of the Chromatic Scale.

So do yourself a favor and… well… you know — GET CRACKIN’ ON IT!

Alright.. enough with the preachin’.

What I wanted to do today is to show you some VERY common chord progressions (A chord progression is the collection of chords that make up a song.)

Let’s use the key of C as an example.

C D E F G A B C

We have learned that the:

I (one) chord in any major key is ALWAYS major.
ii (two) chord in any major key is ALWAYS minor.
iii (three) chord in any major key is ALWAYS minor.
IV (four) chord in any major key is ALWAYS major.
V (five) chord in any major key is ALWAYS major.
vi (six) chord in any major key is ALWAYS minor.

That gives us for the key of C these here chords:

C Dm Em F G Am

Great! But how do we use ‘em?

There are common, that is, VERY often used chord progressions using only these 6 chords. Here’s some of them:

C F G F C — The most common chord progression there is. Have you ever heard of songs like “Louie Louie”, or “Wild Thing”? Well, there ya go…

C F C G C — “Cherry Cherry”, “What I Like About You”

Alright… So I’m dating myself here with my choice of songs. But I just wanted you to know that I wasn’t joking about this. Here’s more stuff:

C Am F G C
C Am Dm G C
C F C
C F C G C
C Am Em C

Think about ANY combination of these 6 chords that are possible — It’s been used. It’s been done before. Many times.

Because of what I said above about the chords in any key, I could show you the progressions in this way:

I IV V IV I
I IV I V I
I vi IV V I
I vi ii V I
I IV I
I IV I V I
I vi ii I

These will work in any key.

Play these progressions. Get the sound of them in your head — in a bunch of keys and styles.

Now… If you work on this, and spend the time learning your major scales, and understand which chords are major and which are minor, you will begin to learn the ability of “pulling” chords off of a recording.

That is a verrrrry cool skill to have.

Please understand that there may often be more chords in a song than those that are “natural” to a key. But ya gotta start somewhere, right?

Right. So get ‘er done.

Want to play guitar? Don't know how to go about it? Here are your options! We'll help you go through the easy steps!

Wow! Now you’ve decided to play the guitar! The problem now is, “where do I start from?” never fear, for there are a lot of reasonable ways by which you can launch your guitar learning career. Depending on which suits you – and which seems more fun – there are many options available. One of these is the internet. You can access online guitar lesson via the web – using e-books. You can arrange for a private tutor to teach you, or have a group guitar lesson. Alternatively, if you are one for AV’s – audiovisuals – you may savor the opportunity to learn using videos, CD’s and DVD’s. My personal recommendation is that you have brief but steady lessons over a period of weeks. Believe me, I’ve seen it work magic before.

I am almost 100% sure that your first lessons on guitar training will begin with simple stuff as lessons on the basic parts that make up the guitar, the guitar pick, how to place your fingers on the strings, chords and chord notations, how to strum the guitar and the pressure factor. You might to learn how to play a couple of songs, too. You may learn how to make minor repairs to the guitar, as well as how to tune it.
For your first lesson, you won’t be needing anything fancy: just a simple setting with three basics: your guitar (six stringed, mind you), the guitar pick and an armless chair. The point to harp on here is the choice of pick. Since you are a beginner, I suggest that you get as many picks as possible of various sizes to see which will suit your palms. If you are thinking that is a little bit extravagant, hey, look on the bright side! At least if you misplace one, you have spares! Here’s a tip from much years of observation: most beginners tend to favor the medium gauge pick.

For your subsequent lessons, your guitar should be tuned. I expect that by now, you should have been taught how to tune your guitar. If, for some reasons whatsoever, you are unlucky to not have been taught, you could purchase a guitar tuner to tune your guitar. This shouldn’t cost much and are quite easy to use.

Before you start splashing in the sea of “real music”, you will have to first learn basic chords. These are chords, G, C and D, all of them majors, of course. When you have learnt these, and become able to interchange and transpose them, then you can be said to have “come into the music”/

Remember, revision is vital. Constantly, revise what you have been taught for at least 15 minutes daily. You should pay more attention to tuning your guitar. Also try to you’re your mind – at least most of it – on your scales and chords.

If your thumbs and fingers ache dully at the beginning, fear not. It is a normal part of the process. You might remedy the situation by switching to a guitar with less taut strings.

Country Guitar Lessons – Guitars and Guitarists

Country guitar lessons in these days of the world wide web are now popular all over the world. If you are wondering what the fuss is about I will just mention some aspects of country guitar playing that excite the intere st of music fans and guitar enthusiasts alike. This article will focus on a couple of the more individualistic guitar styles in country music and also talk a little about the Telecaster – the country musician’s guitar.

First let us look at a guitar style that has entered the country genre through blues and rock. The slide guitar, also known as the bottleneck guitar is a lyrical way of expressing feelings through guitar music. It was developed in the early twentieth century by the early blues players, and popularized by young white rock and blues players in the nineteen sixties. Now there are many country guitar players who see the musical possibilities in this style of playing. The key to this technique is sliding an object along the guitar strings to make a whining or wailing sound. This presents the guitar player with many opportunities to play notes that fall between the frets of the guitar as well as imitating the sound of a singing voice.

The term “bottleneck” refers to the practice of many slide guitar performers of producing the sliding sound by fitting the neck of a bottle to their first or second finger. Popular wisdom has it that other players used the blade of a knife. Modern slide guitar players usually go to a music shop and buy a slide. You can play slide guitar with the guitar held in the normal playing position or with the guitar in your lap. A player can use an ordinary steel string acoustic guitar tuned in the standard way or to an open chord, or a resonator guitar which has a distinctive metallic sound well suited to slide playing.

Another guitar style used by country guitar players is chicken pickin’, developed to high art by Walon Jennings. It is used in lead guitar solos and involves the guitar player pulling on the string with his right hand fingers and at the same time damping the string with his left hand. Most country guitar players use a plectrum or thumbpick to play bass notes in conjunction with chicken pickin’ on the treble strings.

Chet Atkins is a country guitar player who was adept at the chicken pickin’ technique but he was most well known for his adaptation of the Travis picking technique. Merle Travis developed an impressive solo playing technique using his thumb to pick bass notes and his index finger to play melody or filler notes. Chet Atkins was so impressed with Travis’ solos that he assumed that Travis was using his second and ring fingers in addition to his index finger. This mistaken assumption led to a whole new generation of country guitar players inspired by the Chet Atkins style.

If you want to take country guitar lessons you should learn about the typical sound that is associated with country guitar music. While rock and roll has as many sounds as there are guitar players, country guitar has its own sound. This is due to most country players opting to stay with the clean, unadorned sound of the Fender Telecaster. The “Tele” had a sound that made aspiring guitar players sit up and take notice combined with a design that made it a dream to play. It is a solid body electric guitar with two pickups, and was the first electric guitar to be successfully produced and sold on a large scale.

In the early days of the electric guitar both rock and country guitar players wanted to be heard by the audience without feedback interfering with the sound of the guitar. The Telecaster filled the bill when it came out in 1950 and has remained a popular choice for solo guitarist ever since. Country guitarists noted for being enthusiastic Telecaster players include Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, James Burton and Merle Haggard.

Learn to Play Guitar Online

For those of you who always wanted to play the guitar but did not have time to go for classes, there is a wonderful new option courtesy the internet. Going to a guitar class can be quite a frustrating experience and it can also be very expensive, especially if you are a bit slow in picking up the game. You might have to keep going back for lessons, and this can be quite a drain on resources such as your money and time. Many people actually put off learning to play the guitar because they cannot invest so much effort into doing so.

DVDs, CDs and books on the same subject have limited success because the course material is static. Online lessons, on the other hand, are always changing and the websites are updated constantly with new content. This is especially important since it enables you to practice playing on the latest tunes and not just on the classics.

There are specific websites that take you through the process of learning how to play a guitar. There are even sites where absolute beginners can pick up the rudiments of playing this instrument.

If you are a complete novice at playing the guitar and do not even know how to hold it correctly, do not despair because there are websites that can help you out. You will get lessons starting with learning how to hold a pick the right way and you can progress all the way to learning different styles of guitar playing. Along the way, you will learn about basic chords and how to play them with the help of detailed instructions.

Learning to play guitar online will cost you a little money although you can also get lessons for free from certain sites. Either way, it will be considerably cheaper than going to a place for actual lessons. If you are unsure about whether the lesson will be able to do you any good, you could use the trial lessons that most websites offer. They will give you a good idea of what to expect and also help you gauge your ability to learn from the online lessons.

You also have the ability of personalizing your online guitar lesson, which makes it very easy for you to progress very fast.

It goes without saying that you will get expertise in playing the guitar only if you get lessons from the right online course. Unfortunately, there are many inferior quality guitar courses available online, and it is very possible that a person who tries them gets disillusioned after a while.

This is why it is extremely important that you exercise great caution while choosing an online guitar course. Read a lot of reviews before you make any decision that involves spending money. If you select the right course, you will be able to make a good deal of progress in a very short while. Before long, you will be able to play guitar with a good deal of competence.
