Playing Live With Guitar Backing Tracks : How You Can Benefit From It And Get The Perfect Gig!

Join us as we examine the many benefits of using guitar backing tracks to play live gigs. You’ll learn how using guitar backing tracks can improve your skills and ability as well as making practice time more enjoyable, along with the many perks of using them to play live.

One of the most beneficial learning tools for a guitarist looking to fully master the guitar is to play a lot of live gigs. Playing live shows is great for honing and perfecting your skills and abilities under the pressure of playing in front of an audience. Performing in front of an audience will help you to gauge how far you’ve come and give you a chance to entertain people and put all of that practice time to good use.

One reason why some guitarists may not do live gigs is because they aren’t in a band and have no one to back them up on stage. Others may be in a band with members who aren’t as dedicated, or don’t show up to practices, so playing a live gig would be a disaster.

Ever had drunk band members turn up during practice? Whatever the reason may be, these individuals are missing out on a great teaching experience that could really help them to master their instrument by not playing live. This is where playing live gigs with guitar backing tracks can be extremely useful.

Guitar backing tracks are digitally remastered music tracks without guitar and vocals. They are the perfect band members, always arriving whenever you want them to and never ever drunk. Guitar backing tracks are the serious guitar student’s most effective secret weapon for improving their playing style and perfecting their instrument. These backing tracks sound great, just like a professional band playing behind you to back you up.

Guitar backing tracks are great for private practice sessions as well. They increase your skill by allowing you to practice chords and scales as well as improvising solos to a live backing band. This practice experience also helps you to develop the timing skills necessary to play along with other musicians. They improve practice time by making it less dull and helping you to use the knowledge you have gained to create awesome lead work as well as perfecting rhythm techniques. By perfecting your skills with guitar backing tracks, you can also work on perfecting your tone. All great tone comes from the player’s abilities and how well they actually play; it’s not all about the fancy equipment. Remember, the good old saying: The tone is in your fingers.

Once you’ve gotten comfortable with your skills and abilities, you’re ready to put them to the ultimate test. Using guitar backing tracks for a live performance will allow you to express your creativity by using your knowledge to improvise great lead work and to thoroughly rock the crowd without worrying about your back up band messing up or missing the show.

Till then, I wish you all the success in your next gig and I hope you’ve enjoyed this article.Rock on!

Why You Need an Electric Guitar Tuner

Tuning an electric guitar should be done using an electric guitar tuner. It is the method of tuning that I strongly recommend to anyone asking for advice on tuning a guitar. Almost all professional guitarists use an electric guitar tuner. There are at least two reasons why. First, they know the value of being in tune. Second, they know electric guitar tuners are the quickest way to get in tune.

The first time I played a guitar was when I borrowed a friend’s instrument in college. The friend came over a few days later to see how I was doing. I strummed a few chords. He cringed. Since I had been playing so much the instrument was no longer in tune; in fact, it wasn’t even close to being in tune. Having had very little real musical experience, I could not even tell that the guitar was no longer in tune.

Some parts of playing the guitar are obvious, for example: fretting chords, picking, strumming, etc. Developing a musical ear, while not as obvious, is just as important, if not more so. The best way for a beginner to improve his or her ear is to consistently play in tune. In fact, playing out of tune will, not surprisingly, reduce the speed at which a beginner will develop his or her ear. Making matters worse, many beginners do not want to spend much money on their first guitar. Sadly, they end up with cheaply made guitars that go out of tune easily. The result is often real frustration – frustration that easily can be avoided through the combination of a decent guitar and a good tuner.

For many years, the Boss TU-2 was the electric guitar tuner of choice. But, there was a problem with the TU-2. It was only accurate to +/- 3 cents (a cent refers to 1/100 of the distance between consecutive notes). Three cents is discernible by somebody with a good ear. Furthermore, when two musicians would tune their guitars, each using his or her own TU-2 tuner, the guitars could be out of tune by as much as 6 cents.

In the not-too distant past, a number of well-known professional guitarists used Peterson strobe tuners. One such guitarist who used a Peterson tuner was former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash (he now uses a different tuner). Andy Timmons, a guitarist’s guitarist, also has used Peterson strobe tuners. The good thing about Peterson strobe tuners is that they were accurate to +/- 1 cent. But, despite the good accuracy, there were a couple problems with the Peterson tuners. First, they were just downright expensive. Second, they were known to break down. If you search the internet, you can easily find several stories of people who bought a Peterson electric guitar tuner and, a short while later, it stopped working.

Thankfully, in recent years, a new generation of electric guitar tuners has become available. These tuners are accurate (+/- 1 cent), high-quality and relatively inexpensive.

7 Easy Metal Songs To Play On Guitar

So you may have started playing guitar, learning the necessary skills to get yourself going, and now you’re on the hunt for easy metal songs to play on guitar. Well, I salute you for indulging in metal guitar since attempting this genre on guitar will really test your tempo, speed, technical detail, and patience.

Here is a compilation of easy metal songs to play on guitar that are practical goals for beginning guitarists. There’s always going to be a debate on what “metal” truly means as a genre, but this list is really all about sculpting your skills for the heavier and more aggressive side of playing guitar.

* “Confined” by As I Lay Dying

This metal song on guitar is definitely a test of your double-picking abilities. The tempo for this song may appear daunting, but your main focus should be on precision and rhythm since picking is emphasized in somewhat simple patterns.

* “Faint” by Linkin Park

Although this is considered “nu-metal” it still falls into the genre of metal. This song can give you more of a lesson in consistency and chord structure as you move smoothly in and out of the verses and choruses.

* Most of “End of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage is fairly easy.

When you take a stab at an easy metal song on guitar, you need a taste of a break-down riff and “End of Heartache” contains just that. To be honest, most of this song is a break-down riff. You’ll also find a nice mix of fair lead licks to practice on as well.

* The lead riff of “Enter Sandman” by Metallica isn’t too bad.

This riff is considered a classic and anybody who’s anybody as a guitarist usually knows this one. It’s at a medium tempo and isn’t too difficult for a beginner.

* “All That’s Left” by Thrice

This easy metal song on guitar starts with a sweet riff that gets fists pumping immediately. As the song continues, you’ll find a nice mix of power chords and strong palm-muted rhythms to practice.

* “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” by Underoath

Again, this can be considered a different kind of metal, but Underoath usually doesn’t disappoint. “Dangerous Business” gives you some experience with power chords along with some more diverse chord formations right from the beginning of the tune.

* “Change” by The Deftones

Another “nu-metal” tune that’s easy on guitar for metal players, “Change”, should introduce style into your playing. Although this tune appears to be side-splittingly simple, the subtleties of the song lie in your ability to emulate the band’s style.

In your guitar travels I’m sure that you’ll start your own personal list of metal guitar songs that are easy for you to play, but these can get your foot in the door if you’re not sure where to go yet. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new favorite band out of this list.

Guitar Lessons For Children-You Might Be Surprised

First off, let me say that the expression “guitar lessons for children” is a bit of a misnomer Music is music, it doesn’t matter if it’s an adult playing it or a child, the music lessons are all indistinguishable .

In this article, I will provide the justification for the aforementioned statements. When contemplating guitar lessons for children, I think we can all agree that children for many reasons are not the same as adults.

In the case of guitar lessons there are two characteristics that are most important, they are:

You already know this, but every part of a child’s body is smaller than an adult’s I remember when I was a child, I thought my parents were huge. Especially my father. He’s all of 5’8″, but I remember looking at his shoes in his closet thinking, “I’ll never be that big”.

When I was a kid, my Uncle Bob gave me a guitar that he bought at a garage sale. To my utter disappointment, my hands just weren’t big enough to play the thing.

Child’s Guitars

Back when I first picked up a guitar, I had no idea that the people that make guitars also manufacture them for little people too (I hope that was politically correct).

If you think you might be interested in getting guitar lessons for children, make plans first to get a guitar that is smaller than what a grownup would play. Finding the right guitar is so critical to your child’s success that I cannot stress this point enough.

Here’s an incredible video of and eight year old playing on stage. This should get your kids juices flowing. Even from a distance you can tell that his guitar is a little smaller than the other ones.

New Child’s Guitars

Try to avoid buying a new child’s guitar. Shifty store owners or salesmen know that buying anything for your child is an emotional purchase. They could try to get as much mulah as possible from you because they know you may be willing to spend a lot to make your kid happy. If you live in or near a big city, there is probably a used instrument shop around. They deal mostly in school band instruments, but you might get lucky and find what you’re looking for. One advantage of getting a used guitar is that you’re not taking a big hit on depreciation like the first owner did.

Inexpensive Guitars

Now don’t get me wrong, I should also say, “Don’t go cheapo”. Relatively inexpensive guitars are fairly plentiful and easy to find. Try to resist the urge to pick one up. The reason that inexpensive guitars are bad for students is because they are built with compromises. Usually they are built with the strings too far from the neck. This is done so that the neck can warp and the guitar can still be played, but the student will have great difficulty playing it. I’ve had friends that bought cheap guitars, but in every case that I can think of, they either ended up buying a better guitar or they stopped playing altogether.

Short Attention Span

Before buying guitar lessons for children, the other important thing to think about is that children almost always have a short attention span.

Of course, I didn’t think I had a short attention span when I was a kid. Everyone probably thinks that way. I guess it’s only natural that I didn’t think I had a short attention span, but I do remember when one of my teenage sons took the lawnmower apart so he could rebuild it, only he never put it back together because he went on to another project. I just took it for granted that once a project got started, it probably wouldn’t get finished.

Distractions

When all four of my children expressed a desire to play guitar, my first thought was, “here we go again”.

There are just too many distractions for a teenager. With all the distractions, none of my kids got beyond the talking stage when it came to guitar lessons for children. Then, to my surprise, one of my boys started playing guitar when he was a senior in high school. He didn’t want to take lessons though. He said his friends would teach him. It was a social thing I guess.

“Wow”, I thought, that’s a very adult type commitment and ten years later he still plays.

You have the guitar, you have your kids short attention span in mind, you just need the guitar lessons for children. You’ll find that the short attention span is the number one consideration when looking for lessons.

The Actual Lessons

In the old days, (I consider anything before the internet to be the old days) you had to either join the school band or talk your parents into getting a private music instructor for you.

The private music instructors pretty much had the market to themselves, but with a computer in every house, it’s not that way anymore. While you’re surfing around on your computer, you’ll notice at least two types of sites where you can get your guitar lessons for children. One type has lessons that are actually prerecorded videos. You pay a one time fee and then watch the videos anytime you want. With the other type of site, you pay a small fee every month and then receive so many lessons per month. You won’t get a refund if you don’t use the lessons.

The Best Choice

When you think about the short attention span, paying a one time fee for your guitar lessons for children sounds like the way to go. With the best of intentions, your kid will complete each lesson. Things may be going just fine when your child falls victim to what I call, “shiny object syndrome”, in other words, something else looks interesting or they just might want to take some time off for awhile. Believe me, I saw that with my own kids. They were always jumping to another activity before finishing the first one.

A personal instructor is trying to pay his bills so he wouldn’t be very happy about his student dropping guitar in favor of something else. A personal instructor would most likely try to talk your child into keeping the guitar lessons for children continuing.

It also doesn’t work out to “take a break” with a membership site, where you’ll have to pay whether you use the lessons or not.

What Have We Learned?

With a little bit of planning, you and your kid can be well prepared by the time you go shopping for guitar lessons for children. Take a child’s size and mental differences into account before making any decisions. I personally believe that your best bet when buying guitar lessons for children would be a fixed price site, where you pay a one time fee and then your child could watch the video lessons any time they feel like it.

How to Play Guitar Tabs a Beginners Guide

Learning to read guitar tab is the fastest method of reading music for the guitar. The greatest thing about it is that you don’t need any musical theory to comprehend how to play guitar tabs since the music is basically an upside down guitar neck.

This article is going to explain how guitar tabs are formed, how you can read individual notes and chords on tab and provide some easy to understand examples. After reading this article you’ll be able to go ahead and start finding tabs of your favourite songs and learning them.

The Concept of Guitar Tablature

If you’ve taken some beginner guitar lessons or watch some videos you know that that 6 strings on the guitar are numbered from the bottom to top 1 to 6. The low E string being the 6th string and the high E string being the 1st string.

When you see a piece of tab what you get is something like this

1st ——–
2nd ——–
3rd ——–
4th ——–
5th ——–
6th ——–

These would represent the 6 strings of your guitar, but picture it that you’ve laid your guitar down on a table and you’re staring down at it. Remember the 1st string is the bottom string when you’re holding your guitar.
Guitar tabs will have numbers or dots on particular strings telling you which fret to press on and on which string.

EXAMPLE

1st -4——
2nd ——–
3rd ——–
4th —–6–
5th ——–
6th ——-7

Reading Guitar Tabs

Reading guitar tabs is just a matter of interpreting the numbers, which are the frets you must press down on, and the string numbers, which are the strings you must play.

The above example tab is telling us to first press on the 4th fret of the 1st string and play the note. Next press on the 6th fret of the 4th string and play the note and lastly the 7th fret of the 6th string and play the note. That’s it you’ve just played your very first guitar tab.

Of course this is very simplistic and complete songs are far more advanced but this is the basics of how to play guitar tabs.

Guitar Tabs as Chords

Often there will be a guitar tab that shows a chord you must play. This will look differently then what is above because it’s telling you to play some strings and not others while also pressing down on more then one fret at a time.

An ‘x’ on a string means that you do not hit that string while playing. So for example the below tab is telling you to play a D chord but only hitting the first 3 strings.

1st —2—-
2nd —3—-
3rd —2—-
4th —x—-
5th —x—-
6th —x—-

Note how you form the D chord position on strings 1, 2 and 3 but are instructed only to hit the first 3 strings.

There are more advanced concepts when it comes to how to play guitar tabs, but this is enough to get you started so you can find some of your favourite songs to practice with. The concept of how tabs work is the same for difficult and easy songs the only thing you’ll notice will be some additional symbols that require you to play the note(s) a little differently. This could mean you need to bend or slide to the note or use some other form of technique.

Learning How to Read Music on Guitar

If you play guitar, or are thinking about taking it up you should decide if being able to read guitar music is important to you or not. This have a big impact in how you decide to learn to play the instrument. Why? For a couple of reasons.

1.) Not learning how to read music and relying on Tablature to learn new tunes and just knowing the names of chords is a lot easier then comprehending musical theory and the notes on each string.

2.) If you decide you want to know how to read guitar music then it’s going to take a bit longer to learn the basics. There is more time that must be put in learning additional skills and knowledge needed later on.

What does it take to learn how to read guitar music

The initial part of learning to read music on guitar is learning the musical staff. This consists of the 5 lines and 4 spaces you see on any sheet music. Most guitar lesson home study programs should teach this, be sure to double check that it’s covered before you fork over any money.

The second portion of learning how to read guitar music is understanding the names of each string, and the notes on those strings up to the 5th fret. This corresponds to the notes you’ll be reading from sheet music. This is of course the beginning stages of learning to read music for guitar, and as you learn to read chords it will become more difficult.

The simplest way to Learn to Read Guitar Music

Learning to read sheet music on guitar isn’t impossible on your own, how ever it might take you sometime if you don’t have any previous musical experience. Having a quality guitar lesson book or video on hand will save you time while learning.

The popular learn guitar courses such as Learn and Master Guitar cover learning the notes on each string, how to read music, theory, and scales. These are all intertwined and will take you from just being a strumming guitar player to an intermediate and advanced player.

Country Guitar Lessons – Country Music Is All About Passion

If you like country music and you consider you would like to receive some country guitar lessons, you might want to think about taking them online. As strange as it may seem, interactive guitar lessons are becoming more and more appealing, mainly because they are much more cost effective than spending time in a music studio, and people find them more convenient.

There is no simple way to be taught how to play the guitar. It calls for time and application on your part to get genuinely good at it. You simply have to work at it. But just like everything else in life, the more you get pleasure from what you are doing, the better you will be at it, and the simpler it will be as time goes on. There are various programs that have been prepared to educate people how to play country music that are enjoyable, reasonably priced, and you can start anytime you want.

Most of the legendary country songs tell a story, and they are all about emotion. Learning to play country music is not just about learning what chords to play, it is about making them sound good and communicating with your listeners. It is such a liberating feeling to realize that you are able to sit down with an instrument, and ultimately you won’t have to play someone else’s songs anymore. You will be able to make your own music. It is feasible to take country guitar lessons from the comfort of your own home.

You get to practice as much as you want to and as often as you want, and the best aspect is that you get to learn using genuine country music! Just about every great musician started out somewhere, so the more effective the program you choose, the more success you are going to have.

Are Left Handed Guitar Lessons Any Different?

Left Handed Guitar Lessons

Deciding on whether or not to play takes a lot of soul searching. Playing an instrument is an activity that will take a huge commitment in time. Because of the discrimination they have gone through all of their lives, left handers may feel that will they not only will not find left handed guitars or that they also won’t find left handed guitar lessons.

I may have a vested interest, but I’m hoping you decide to play. Now that the biggest decision has been made, you will have decide which of your hands will be on the fret board. I can’t stress enough how important this is because if you decide to play right handed, but really aren’t comfortable with it, chances are you will move on without even looking for left handed guitars or left handed guitar lessons.

Perhaps the hardest way to learn is to take a right handed guitar, turn it upside down and not change the strings. Most lefties at least modify their strings, if you don’t, you will find it hard to find other friends or instructors that have left handed guitar lessons.

Most lefties (especially those that are on a budget) use a right hand guitar, turn it upside down and then have the strings remounted. If you use this method, you should have a luthier (guitar technician) restring your guitar because it’s not as simple as it sounds.

This method does have a couple of drawbacks. If you do this to an acoustic guitar, it may be hard to keep in tune. When doing this with an electric guitar, the big problem will be that the control knobs will always be an obstruction.
Last, but not least, you could always go with getting a genuine left handed guitar. There are at least two problems with this, availability and cost. You probably won’t find too many musical instrument stores that stock left handed guitars. To the rescue once again is the internet.

Don’t go down the road of special ordering a new left handed guitar from a music store. It will cost you. One way to save money is to look on the internet for a model that you like. By eliminating the middleman, (the music store owner) you may be able to save a lot of money. A lot of people don’t think about it, but most cities have used musical instrument stores; try there. Also, often overlooked are the pawn shops. They can have great deals if they have what you want

If you’ve picked the first option and are ready for your left handed guitar lessons, you might try working online with Ben Willis. You can contact Ben at his main website at: lefthandedguitarplayer.blogspot.com. The two of you can then work out a lesson plan.

Every solution brings up another problem. The one I see here involves tablature. With the strings being upside down, I don’t see how tablature could work, For those of you that don’t know, tablature is a quick way to see how to place your fingers on the fret board to make the notes and chords you want to play. The traditional musical student probably wouldn’t approve of it, but tablature is an easier way to learn than the old method of reading sheet music.

Fortunately, for the people choosing the second or third options, your left handed guitar lessons will be almost the same as for a right hander. The best attribute of options two and three is that you can still take advantage of the time saving feature of learning tablature.

You’re never totally alone if you have a computer. If you can’t figure out how to make a chord, login to Chordfind.com for instant instructions.

If you have decided to go ahead and play left handed (three cheers for you if you did), I feel that the best option for you is the third option: buying a left hand guitar. The nice thing about using the second or third option is that you won’t have to search for an instructor that has special left handed guitar lessons.

Since you won’t have to find lessons that specifically say “left handed guitar lessons” if you are using option two or three, I would recommend that you look into Guitar Superstars for your lessons. Things are a lot different now than when I started playing in 1970. Private lessons were prohibitively expensive, but now with lesson plans like Guitar Superstars, you can get expert help at an affordable one-time price.

* “Faint” by Linkin Park

* “Change” by The Deftones
