Boston, MA (PRWEB) November 17, 2010

Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Berklee College of Music, is unveiling an exclusive new online course with guitar legend, Grammy award-winning artist, and Berklee alum, Steve Vai. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques provides an unprecedented opportunity for musicians from across the globe to take an “under the hood” look at the work of one of music’s most influential guitarists, learn the secrets behind Steve’s unique playing style, and incorporate Steve’s techniques into their own playing. The Steve Vai Guitar Techniques online course builds upon the guitar curriculum Berklee has been providing to students for decades.

“What’s fascinating to me is that the barriers to learning music directly from recognized experts – whether it’s myself or the rest of Berklee’s renowned guitar faculty – no longer exist with online music education,” said Vai. “I’m intimately involved in creating this course, from the crafting of the lesson content, to providing hours of never-before-seen video, and even a dedicated live chat between myself and the online students. This truly is an evolution in the way to teach and learn guitar.”

Since Berkleemusic’s inception, more than 30,000 students from over 130 countries have studied online. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques is another powerful addition to Berkleemusic’s extensive guitar curriculum, which in 2007 received the Distance Learning College Course Award for Guitar Chords 101 from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. Berkleemusic currently offers over a dozen online guitar courses authored and led by Berklee’s esteemed faculty covering all areas of study, both genre-based and technique based.

“We are excited and privileged to have Steve Vai join our portfolio of renowned course authors,” said Debbie Cavalier, Berklee’s Dean of Continuing Education. “This new course and partnership with Vai is a natural evolution of our ongoing dedication to providing innovative courses and incredible opportunities to students around the world.”

Steve Vai Guitar Techniques presents students with the chance to gain a deep understanding of Vai’s death-defying playing styles, repertoire, techniques and musical concepts. This 12-week online course will not only teach students to craft and perform lead lines like those in “Tender Surrender,” “For the Love of God” and “The Attitude Song,” but also will teach students Vai’s distinctive and seemingly impossible techniques such as two-hand tapping, sweep picking, sliding, pull-offs and other ear-bending licks. Each lesson will include play exercises, listening examples, hours of exclusive video, song transcriptions, a performance assignment and more. The course is taught by Vai and members of Berklee College of Music’s guitar department, who provide all students with detailed and personalized feedback on their work on a week-to-week basis.

The course is now open for enrollment for the school’s winter term which begins on January 10, 2011. For more information regarding the course, registration information and to even sample a guitar course, visit Berkleemusic.com. Additional course offerings include Guitar Chords 101, Guitar Scales 101, Blues Guitar, Class Rock Guitar and Rock Guitar Soloing and many more.

How to Play the Guitar For Beginners – 5 Important Techniques You Must Learn to Get Started

Are you just starting out with the guitar? Is there a song you want to play or maybe one that you’ve written? Perhaps you started, gave up, but now are ready to really learn again. No matter where you are at, now is the time to pick up your guitar and REALLY learn. Keep reading as I explain five of my tips on how to play the guitar for beginners.

Tip #1: Get to know the basic “open” chords

I remember when I first learned the power of chords. I thought they were magical. I still do. Simply by holding a few strings at certain frets, all of a sudden all of the notes automatically sound good together. My advice is to start out with the simple E, A, D, C, and G chords. These are the types that only require two or three fingers. Not only are they easy to learn, but they are also the foundation for thousands of popular songs.

The trick is to practice holding a chord and playing it until you get a clear sound. Then practice releasing your hand and try to reposition your fingers again as quickly as possible. Once you’ve mastered a few chords in this way, practice switching back and forth between chords as quickly as possible. Strum the guitar each time for feedback.

Tip #2: Learn to play a real song

This is a really important tip. It is important to learn real songs from the very beginning. Avoid getting lost in drills or renditions of “Three Blind Mice”. The point of learning to play the guitar to actually play the guitar. There are many hundreds of popular and/or classic songs that only require two or three of the basic chords. Learning a few classic songs early on will not only teach you a lot, but boost your confidence and keep you motivated..

Tip #3: Yes, you have to practice scales

Unfortunately, scales really are required. In fact, they are vital to your to learning how to play. Practicing scales is equivalent to weight lifting and drilling in sports. Athletes spend more time practicing and conditioning their bodies than they do playing the game. The same is true for the guitar. Musical scales form the foundation of nearly all music. Practicing scales trains your fingers to across the strings, back and forth along the guitar. Mastering scales makes it easy and effortless to play the right notes. You’ll barely even have to think about it after awhile.

Tip #4: Practice blindfolded

This is one technique that really helped me learn how to play the guitar. I practice chords this way. I also practice picking notes and composing whole songs with this method. When you practice this way blindfolded, you quickly train hands and fingers to go where they are supposed to go on the guitar. You will develop a “feel” for the guitar this way. If you are ever playing for an audience, you won’t have time to stop and look for the right finger position. The key is to train your fingers to automatically go where they need to go.

Tip #5: Use an expert

Finally, my main recommendation for learning how to play the guitar, for beginners especially, is to get guidance from an an experienced teacher. You might choose a private tutor or an online guitar training program. Either way, you need a well designed program or teacher to lead you step-by-step through the learning process. A qualified teacher or well produced program will know what challenges and pitfalls you will encounter and will know how to guide you past them.

My personal preference is to invest in a good online guitar training program. Not only is this much more affordable, but you still get all the benefits of a personal tutor. With an online tutorial, your “virtual” tutor will be available any time, day or night to help you learn. Also, you get to speed up, slow down, or reverse at any time. Try doing that with an actual teacher.

These were my tips and techniques for how to play the guitar for beginners. If you follow these guidelines, I know you will learn to play great guitar. You will notice an improvement faster than you thought possible. Before long, you will be playing the guitar with skill and with ease. Your friends will also notice and “Wow! Where did you learn to play like that?”

Now, start playing!

Learn How To Play Electric Guitar – Top 10 Techniques You Can Use Today

The electric guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments today. This instrument is used by most musicians since it is portable and easy to use. However, not everyone can play this guitar like a professional. Here are some tips that will help people learn how to play electric guitar.

The first tip to learn how to play electric guitar is to get to know the instrument. By acquainting yourself with the instrument, you’ll know its parts, how they each function, and how they each contribute to the making of wonderful music.

The second tip is to choose a teacher. There are two ways to learn how to play electric guitar. You can choose to learn by yourself or you can choose to select a teacher to guide you with the basics. It is advisable to have a teacher if you are a beginner since not everything can be learned by yourself. A music teacher can teach you how to read notes and scales. By knowing how to read notes, you can play musical pieces right off a music sheet. You also enjoy a wider range of musical genres.

The third tip involves knowing how to play the basics first. Like the piano, a guitar also has its sets of notes and chords. You only know which strings to press and where to press them. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself being able to read notes off a musical score. This is useful if you want to become a professional musician.

Once you master the notes and the chords, you can journey into strumming. This is the fourth tip to learn how to play electric guitar. Most guitar players use different kinds of strumming patterns. This is especially helpful when playing songs off a song magazine or when you just want to perform an acoustic version of the song.

The fifth tip in learning how to play electric guitar is to incorporate some simple scales and licks to your guitar playing. Scales can be done once you master your basic notes. The same goes for licks.

The sixth tip is to master how to bend strings. You can also apply vibrato or make sure that your notes vibrate while you play. This is easy to do yet hard to master. Musicians often apply various techniques in doing so.

The seventh tip to learn how to play electric guitar is to learn how to use the volume and tone controls of the guitar to your advantage. The electric guitar is also said to be able to produce a wide variety of sounds. By knowing how to use the controls found on the guitar, you can have access to these different sounds.

The eighth tip also has a great deal to do with sounds. The student is advised to know how to mute the electric guitar’s strings. Muting strings means being able to silence the strings which you don’t want to give-off sound. This is because the electric guitar’s amplifier magnifies any sound played on the guitar which includes these unnecessary strings.

People who have chosen to master the electric guitar should not overlook the ninth tip. They should remember to first select easy songs to play. Take things one day at a time. Don’t rush. You’ll master the electric guitar eventually. Trying to play difficult and complicated songs all at once will only overwhelm you so to avoid feeling stressed out, do the easy ones first.

The last tip to learn how to play electric guitar is to practice. Practicing how to play the electric guitar is the most important tip of all since everything is made easier as you become familiar with the instrument. Since you already know the basics, it is up to you to perfect these techniques so that you can become a more skillful musician.
