Teaching yourself how to play guitar?

My 13 year old wants to start learning how to play the guitar but does not want to take lessons because he wants to "teach himself". My girlfriend and I want to buy him an acoustic guitar for his upcoming birthday and we were wondering if there was a specific DVD or book that you would recommend to accompany the guitar to help him learn how to play? Nothing too advanced, but something that a 13 year old would enjoy and understand.

he doesn't want lessons, but he'll get a dvd? hmm.

From 9 years of experience and taking a total of about 5 or 6 guitar classes my first 2 months… i would HIGHLY advise him to take at least 2-4 classes just to see if he is playing it right. I still say i've taught myself because 5 classes is nothing…the good thing about classes is that you can actually watch the person do it, get special tips and hints, and finally you can actually ask questions. Once again, a video is not very good when you are beginning, it's more for people more advanced (even though it says beginner). I bought a video a long time ago and it was the biggest waste of money.
