What is a guitar metronome and how can I use to learn how to play guitar?

I am a beginner in guitar playing. I have learned the basic chords, some picking techniques and now, I want to learn how to shred. Of course, shredding is not something easy, it's very hard too.
Recently, I saw on a website something about a guitar metronome. What is this, I really don't know what it is. It says, if I play with a guitar metronome, I will learn shredding faster than playing without one.

It also said something about some tempos I should set on the metronome. I don't have one, so I think I will use an online metronome. Somebody, tell me please, how should I set the tempos or how can I make it good for me. Thanks!

A guitar metronome is used to practice your timing and to learn to play different notes at different speed but in a stable manner and not erratic.

The metronome forces you to keep time while you practice your chords or scales.

Start with a slow count of the metronome and try to play one note per click. Eventually, you can increase the beats per minute (BPM) as you get better.
