Ok so my friend and I are having a somewhat heated discussion about what is more difficult to play, the guitar or drums. And so I would like to prove to him what is harder.
I’ve played both for several years now. I started as a guitarist so perhaps my perspective is a touch skewed, but in my opinion drums are far more difficult.
Drums require a *GREAT* deal more discipline (you *must* always be in time, keep a steady pace, a solid rhythm) greater stamina (there’s far, far more physical movement involved in drum than guitar), and there are far far more technical variations on drum , and different techniques in general than on guitar. (for instance: the grip you use for your sticks, whether you play heel up or down on your bass drum, ability to control the sound out of high-hats, and learning all the different tones a drum can make by striking different parts of the head… and then how to do it accurately and consistantly) , where as guitar You lean on the rhythm section for your tempo and time. if you fall off of your rhythm it’s easy to hide. Also: guitar techniques don’t have nearly as many variations as drum
In essence, drums (granted this depends on your style of music) are a more complex instrument, and in many ways, more important to the structure of the band (drummers are the foundation, and drive rhythm and tempo, guitars are just pretty and lay down your melodies and chord structures)
