When should i be able to play a guitar solo?

I have been playing guitar for almost 2 years and i haven’t really played any kind of solo. At how many years of playing did you play solos? Either your own solo or a one from a song.

Weston,

Personally I was maybe 5 years in, but I had taken a long break.

Hey no big deal for you. Just because you haven’t played one, doesn’t mean you CANT. You are at the perfect level to play them now actually.

Here’s how to learn to make your own solos:
- google and download: free blues backing track in the key of a
- get a chart of the pentatonic scale (your root note will be at the 5th fret on the 6th string)
- play any note in the scale over the backing track
Its great fun being able to make up your own lead parts and solos.

Here’s a solo you can learn pretty easily:
Judas Priest – Livin After Midnight
Green Day American Idiot

That should get you started. Literally pick up your guitar NOW and try this out, you’ll be half way there in a few minutes.

Good Luck,
John
