alright i want to start playing guitar, and its just because i was listening to a neighbor play and it was really nice.
but i dont know where to start? i understand that i need a guitar of course. but if i want to start learning by myself what should i use or do?
i dont want to take lessons.
price of guitar isnt an issue. just whats a good solid accoustic. can you help?
do i need to learn to read sheet music?
how can i teach myself?
i really like that TABS idea thanks!
Oh, boy….
Some of these answers are clueless.
Forget guitar hero or rockband, geez
Yes you need a guitar.
look for a guitar in the 200-400 range to start. under $200 guitars are garbage most of the time and will just be harder to play.
Get a good epiphone, yamaha, ibanez, or my favorite Ovation. There are Taylor guitars around 400. Taylor seems to be a favorite on here. Martins are good but they run a bit higher.
A few lessons to start with is the best way to go, but if not use these two sites.
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/index.php
http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm
The first site is a comprehensive site with all the theory you need to know. Chords, notes , scales, even a guitar tuner. Plus written as well as video lessons ranging from noob to expert.
The second site is good, too for more lessons.
One guy had a great suggestion. If you are friends with the neighbor you heard, ask him if he'd help you start out, then later you guys can "jam" together.
But whatever you do…don't try to learn guitar playing "Tabs". you kinda need to know how to play guitar before a tab would be useful.
Anybody who says tehy learned how to play by only using tabs probably is not all that good. And would be useless in a "jam" session because they don't know WHY they are playing what they play.
Learn the notes of the frets and learn the basic major and minor and minor 7th chords first. these are three or four finger (sometimes 2 finger) chords based at the first 3 or 4 frets. once you are competent at that, you can then start to play "basic acoustic guitar songs.
Hope you have fun.
